The Top 10 Kaiju Anime in Japan for 2022.

If you are a fan of anime and manga, you would know that Kaiju anime is quite interesting and fun to watch.

It is a subgenre of tokusatsu TV shows like the popular Godzilla anime series. But then, what is Kaiju?

For those who don’t know, Kaiju is a Japanese genre of sci-fiction, fantasy films, and TV shows that feature giant monsters. In Japanese, Kaiju means “Strange Beast”.

There are several kaiju anime but in this article, I have made a list of top kaiju anime. So lovers of Kaiju, and those who are fast becoming passionate about Kaiju, gather here and let’s begin the top 10 kaiju anime.

1. Attack on Titan.

As one of the top Kaiju Animes, “Attack on Titan” portrays the survival of humans in the fight against giant Humanoids known as Titans. This story explores what happens after a colossal Titan breaches the protective wall between them and humans.

Titans through the gap began to invade the human territory. They destroyed the Garrison and after that, carried out a massacre in Mozen. Then, we see young Eren Yeager the protagonist, whose town (Mozen) was destroyed and his mother killed by Titans.

He vows to keep the land free from these human-eating monsters. He later discovers that he could transform into a monster. He uses his newfound strength to fight against the Titans.  Attack on Titan is an interesting Kaiju series. It was released in 2013 and has 4 seasons with 75 episodes. This is one Kaiju anime I would recommend.

2. Rage of Bahamut: Genesis

If you are looking for a thrilling adventure with dark fantasy, Rage of Bahamut might just be the anime you are looking for. It tells the story of a world where both humans, gods, and demons mingle and live together.

In the past, they had a common enemy,  Bahamut. They joined forces and sealed its power, breaking the key into halves. Years later, a young woman named Amira searches for her lost mother. She steals one of the keys that sealed Bahamut’s powers.

This action disrupts the existing peace. This action is a larger part of the story. Rage of Bahamut: Genesis was released in 2014 with 12 episodes. It has a second season titled Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul. This Kaiju Anime is so thrilling that you are drawn into its visual ecstasy of heartwarming characters.

3. SSSS. Gridman

Like any other kaiju series, SSS Gridman is a thrilling anime. It explores this monster story in a very exciting way. As an Anime series, it took the Gridman idea and developed it into something beautiful with redefined characters and action.

In the story, a high school student, Yuta Hibiki who suffers from memory loss, learns about a digital being. This being tells him to remember his destiny and sends him on a mission to defeat giant monsters terrorizing his city.

He is pulled into the digital world by this being, only to merge and reappear as a colossal hero-gridman. Yuta, along with his friends, will fight to protect his city. Interestingly, this Kaiju superhero film brings action, and adventure into play.

It provides a solid, soothing experience of giant robots fighting against giant monsters to save the city. SSSS Gridman has a nonconforming plot to it. It is by far a worthy choice when it comes to action. It was released in October 2018 and has 12 episodes.

4. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Though this series was released in 1995 it is one of the top kaiju Anime on this list today. The plot presents how violent angels come down to earth to destroy humans. As the story unfolds, we see a young boy being recruited as a member of a pilot team to destroy these monsters.

This Japanese Mecha anime explores young Shinji’s life after being recruited. It displays the Shinto tradition and cosmology. More than the need to give action and adventure, this series is known for its ability to mess with your mind.

Since the city was attacked, Nerv specialists trained the protagonists as well as other volunteers to keep the earth safe. They are trained to use giant machines like Evangelion. Shinji will save humanity from the angels trying to destroy the earth.

This action classic ran from home from 1995 through 1996. With 26 episodes it is simply one of the best kaiju anime.

5. Darling in the Franxx 

Unlike the others, this Kaiju anime takes a different turn. It explores the love story of two teens notwithstanding a crisis. In this anime, humans were about to go to extinction after Klaxosaurs began to attack them.

Humans found safety in a huge fortress city called Plantations. In this city, children are trained to pilot giant Mechas called Franxx since it is the only way to defeat the Klaxosaurs. One of the main characters Hiro experiences a setback when he fails his aptitude test as an aspiring franxx.

In his bid to run away from all of it, he meets a young girl who had horns growing on her head. She tells him she is Zero Two which was her code name. As the plot develops, Zero Two whose Franxx is “partner Killer” then joins forces with Hiro to fight against the Klaxosaur who kills her partner.

They defeat Klaxosaur and Hiro regains his self-confidence. They fall in love with each other and work to keep humanity safe. Darling of Franxx was released in 2018. If you are looking for Kaiju action with a blend of romance then you should give this a try.

6. Digimon Adventure

When it comes to an amazing adventure, Digimon will give you a run for your time. This Kaiju anime deals with a group of kids whose lives changed after they were transported into a new world by Digivices.

After they are transported into a different world, these teenagers find a way back home and in the process realize they were destined to save the digital world. They pair up with their powerful morphing monsters, Digimon to fight digital monsters like Devimon.

Digimon Adventure is interesting, fun, and children-friendly. It was first aired in 1999 and was later rebooted in 2020.

7. God Eater

In this series, a man-eating monster Aragami seeks to make humanity go extinct. This monster is almost so powerful that only a god-eater with a special oracle cell from a god arc can defeat this enemy. As the story develops, an organization is known as Fenrir trains god-eaters to save humanity.

Lenka Utsugi, who is the protagonist, uses a god arc that takes the form of a blade and a gun. God Eater was produced in 2015 with 13 episodes. If you are looking for something adventurous, with spiky action, then you should check this one out.

8. Dai-Guard

In Dai-Guard, an office worker pilots giants to save the world from aliens. The main character fights against them by taking the responsibility of fighting and using the robot known as Dai pilgrimage-Guard to protect the city.

This series was released in 1999 and ran through 2000. It has 26 episodes. As an interesting Mercha series, Dai-Guard is set in a digitalized Japan. The protagonist, 25 years old Akaggi with the help of his friends, learns to control the robot to keep their world safe.

9. Fafner of the Blue Sky

Fafner of the Blue Sky tells the story of how a peaceful superhero fights monsters to keep his city and people safe. The plot is set on a peaceful island known as Tsumiyajima. Well, it was not so peaceful anymore as aliens threatened the existence of humanity in Tsumiya.

In order to save mankind, fafner, the giant robot, has to fight and protect humanity. This Kaiju was released in 2004 with 51 episodes from three seasons. Fafner of the Blue Sky is not only an interesting Kaiju but a kaiju with a beautiful plot.

10. Kagewani

If you are looking for something more horror-like, with the traditional kaiju series feel, then this is the right series for you. It tells the story of how cryptids attack humans and puts them in danger. This Japanese anime, Kagewani, was released in 2015, with 2 seasons and 26 episodes.

The series follows the life of scientist Sosuke Banba and his encounters with mysterious monsters. Banba searches for answers about this mysterious beast animal that is close to home. This Kaiju is enthralling and you would love it.
